Exploring Ocean Circulation on Icy Moons Heated From Below

چکیده

We numerically explore convection and general circulation of an ocean, encased in a spherical shell uniform thickness, heated from below by spatially heat flux, whose temperature at the upper surface is relaxed to freezing point water. The role salt not considered. describe phenomenology equilibrium solutions across broad range two key non-dimensional numbers: natural Rossby number, measure influence rotation, ratio inner outer radius moon's geometry tangent cylinder. Two distinct regimes are identified, both dominated Taylor columns aligned with rotation axis—“plumes” “rolls” which predominate inside outside cylinder, respectively. Inside convective plumes align that extend bottom ice shell. energize geostrophic turbulence turn generates consisting counter-rotating zonal jets. Moreover, efficient transferring surface, resulting loss ocean polar ice. If suppressed rolls cylinder become dominant mode transfer equatorial cooling. conclude if moons such as Enceladus Europa were be predominantly below, they will likely have “Jovian-like” circulation: unstratified, turbulent, geostrophically controlled strong “Taylor column” behavior

The potential for tidally heated icy and temperate moons around exoplanets

Moons of giant planets may represent an alternative to the classical picture of habitable worlds. They may exist within the circumstellar habitable zone of a parent star, and through tidal energy dissipation they may also offer alternative habitable zones, where stellar insolation plays a secondary, or complementary, role. We investigate the potential extent of stable satellite orbits around a ...

Investigation of Autonomous Control for the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter

The application of nuclear reactors for space power and/or propulsion presents some unique challenges regarding the operations and control of the power system. Terrestrial nuclear reactors employ varying degrees of human control and decision-making for operations and benefit from periodic human interaction for maintenance. In contrast, the control system of a space nuclear power plant (SNPP) em...

Polymerization of Building Blocks of Life on Europa and Other Icy Moons.

The outer Solar System may provide a potential habitat for extraterrestrial life. Remote sensing data from the Galileo spacecraft suggest that the jovian icy moons--Europa, Ganymede, and possibly Callisto--may harbor liquid water oceans underneath their icy crusts. Although compositional information required for the discussion of habitability is limited because of significantly restricted obser...

Approximate solution of laminar thermal boundary layer over a thin plate heated from below by convection

In this paper, an integration of a symbolic power series method - Padé approximation technique (PS - Padé), was utilized to solve a system of nonlinear differential equations arising from the similarity solution of laminar thermal boundary layer over a flat plate subjected to a convective surface boundary condition. As both boundary conditions tended to infinity, the combination of series solut...

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate

In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...
